Funding for Miners Pensions Proposed in Senate

Yesterday, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), announced a bipartisan deal between lawmakers on funding pensions for retired coal miners and their descendants. Manchin said that the America Miners Act, which had the support of Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), and Rep. David Mckinley (R-WV), will come before the full Senate next week as part of the government funding and spending process. This issue has been in the works for several years, as coal mining companies are going bankrupt left and right. As the use of coal gradually declining in the world, companies are not able to pay the pensions they promised their employers and their union. The UMWA, which is chaired by Cecil Roberts, said this yesterday, “Some of the most impressive lobbying you’ve ever seen were UMWA retirees and those camouflaged t-shirts. They were the talk of Capitol Hill. UMWA retirees in $6 tee-shirts out lobbied K-Street Lobbyists in $10,000 suits.” The vote is scheduled to take place later this week, or the early portion of next week.
